Its not so bad, but there is still some tension. Many darker blacks still want to be lighter and use skin lightening cream or pills, like Rihanna. Im not completely black but i identify with my black side and growing up they use to tease me and give me hell about being ';white';. funny thing was i wasnt even white, my dad is a light haitian and my mom is brazilian and syrian.
After ppl grow up its not a big deal and no one even mentions it much now that we are in college. But all you need to do is watch TV and see which blacks get the most Airtime. (Hint: The ones who look like their ancestors got raped the most)How bad are light-skin versus Dark skin tensions among Blacks in the Black American community?
There has always been light skin-dark skin division in the African American community. A long time ago, there used to be something called the ';Paper Bag Test'; and if you were darker then the bag then you were not allowed to join. Many light skinned African American entertainers did not want to identify as black and hid their black identity. There were also songs that went like this, ';If you're white your right, if your yellow your mellow, if your brown stick around and if your back stay black';.
pre 1960 was probably just as bad as it is today. The clubs (blue vein society etc) and the test (paper bag, etc) may not be around anymore but the mentality is. Look at any post around regarding the likes of Beyonce, Vanessa Williams, and other ';lighter'; blacks.
Yeah, and I mostly see darker skinned people belittling and demeaning lighter people. Some even argue they shouldn't be considered black. ------Happened to me and a couple of people I know.
Oh it's really bad. My exes would say I like your skin color it's better than dark skinned women. When I told them my mom is dark skinned my friends would trip out and talking about well, you're mom must be gorgeous for a dark skin woman. Pretty sad, it makes me sick to my stomache. Alot of black people make other black people inferior because of the ';good hair'; ';bad hair'; crap and skin color. Just a process of brainwashing that goes from generation to generation. I've seen both ways though.
This is very sad but does exist. In India the caste system still holds sway - based on skin colour. In the states (where i lived once) there was a lot of silly predjudice between people of light and ';black'; skins.
So called ';yellow skins'; thought they were superior because of their racial mix. They think they are better looking, more intelligent and cleaner living etc. And now this is spreading to Europe. How we can base anything at all on colour of skin is ridiculous. But it goes on.
Dee.
light skin is generally considered beautiful in society as opposed to darker skin,i'm light skinned and growing up i was harassed by other black kids who were darker than me. it is a shame that black people are hating each other because of different skin tones. black people are black people and we come in all shades and we have to stop this.
Well... I would not take it so far to say that light skin blacks are seen as white. that is untrue. Nor, would I say light skin blacks treat dark skin blacks badly. I do know that when you are younger (like HS) there is tension with the girls, and it seems moreso that dark girls dislike light girls, honestly. and there was a time when light skin boys were looked at as ';pretty'; or ';weak';.
In the adult world, I dont think most of us are too hung up on that sort of thing.
For the most part here the lighter women love the very dark men. There may be some light skinned people that act like that, but not very much. I do know my childrens fathers family are very light and they act real funky towards the few family members that are dark and dark people in general, which is IGNORANT. Though my kids ended up light I really don't allow them around their other side of the family because of this mentality. I don't want them thinking they are better than anyone because of their skin tone, hell when it is all said and done we are all still BLACK! I happen to fall in between (would pass the paper bag test) but my fiance, OMG he is so black, that's why I call him sexual chocolate. One thing that does upset me is when people say stupid shyt to me like,';you made sure your kids father was high yellow.'; At that time I was young (19) and that had nothing to do with why I was into him. But I think that us people in the black community need to stop the madness. I have said it before and I will say it again. We are all still BLACK when comes down to it.
from my experience the darker girls were always the most jealous and angry ones their the reason y we have those stereotypes. i never here lightskinned girls talking about how much better they are, its the dark skinned guys who go after light skinned girls and s.h.i.t about dark girls i see it all the time.
As far as I know, this sort of thing got played out after high school. I have not seen this sort of thing much anymore.
And please note that darker skinned blacks also antagonize lighter skinned blacks. I had to deal with that growing up and did absolutely nothing to deserve it.
* There is no SCIENCE behind any Religion, Race, Class, or Caste.
* Because all CURRENT living humans mtDNA is derived from a SINGLE woman.
* She is the MOST-RECENT common ancestor of all humans alive on Earth today with respect to matrilineal descent.

It is only as bad as you make it. It is still a noticable issue but there is so much variety now and for the most part I think we are getting over this.
I dont see other blacks go out of their way to belittle someone whom is darker.
I've seen it the other way around. The darker skinned girls would give lighter skinned girls a hard time in my high school because they ';thought'; the light skinned girls tried to act like they were better. It was all BS regardless. After high school this crap stops anyhow.
light skinned blacks are seen as ';more beautiful'; in society that the dark skin blacks. But honestly I believe that both types are beautiful.
It is not that serious especially in this decade there is no light skin vs dark skin....if you say that it is I would be intrigued about where you lived
That sort of thing happens in grammar school, and not since then have I ever experienced what you are talking about.
Thanks
Honestly, that issue is fading. If you're brain washed it may still be something to tackle.
